UAVs which are transportable by foot and easily deployable can be designed and made at affordable rate in order to acquire, process and distribute aerial images rapidly. Aerial Situational Awareness Platform (ASAP) by Singularity University is the application of UAVs for timely and effective search & rescue (SAR) response during disaster relief .
Typically, the relief action starts when the first responder acquires sufficient situation awareness and trigger the critical chain of responses from relevant profiles. However, gathering situation awareness may not be timely due to current obstacles, such as “infrequent refresh of satellite imagery, high cost of manned aerial vehicles for visual reconnaissance, and challenges with image processing to give a complete picture of where the victims are and in which numbers”.
