easyJet inspect plane with UAV

easyJet recently deployed a UAV to inspect the safety of it’s aircraft: easyJet tasked a small quad rotor UAV  to conduct aircraft maintenance on one of their fleet at Luton Airport last week.

The UAVs multiple payloads including hi-resolution cameras, sensors and laser radar meant the platform was very well equipped to successfully scan the aircraft for damage, transmitting all of it’s findings directly down to engineers at ground level.

Traditionally, aircraft inspections are conducted by cherry pickers operated by engineers, which has been known to be extremely time consuming and in some situations cause flight delays and even cancellations.

In addition to time saving UAVs have another advantage over manual human inspection, as they are pre-programmed before the inspection begins. This means the system is automatically tasked to cover every angle and element of the aircraft removing the potential human error of ‘forgetting’ to check an area.

Ian Davies, easyJet’s head of engineering commented on the advantages of employing UAVs for inspection, particularly after an aircraft has been hit by lightening stating, “We need to inspect the aircraft thoroughly after an incident. To do that takes a lot of man hours. This technology will allow us to do it quicker, will give us a permanent photographic record and it will cut down the time it takes to get the aircraft back into service.”

UAVs are already being used for inspection services across the commercial industries, including inspection of wind turbines and offshore oil rigs. So it comes as no surprise that the platforms are in increasing demand by a multitude of commercial sectors to conduct inspection and surveying tasks on their organisations assets.
